How to Troubleshoot Computer Freeze Problems?

Author admin on 27-07-2010

Remember, the last time your personal computer froze as if stung by a wasp?? !! Well, all of us, I mean the PC users have experienced a similar situation and often wonder what went wrong. Before telling you what you should do to troubleshoot computer freeze problems, let me first try to explain a little bit about what the operating system does when you give it more than one job to do. Let us consider a situation where you have opened one application and it is doing some time consuming work like a download and in the mean time you have decided to test your hand on quick game software. Both the applications want resource allocation, in plain and simple terms they need some RAM and attention from the processor itself. You must also understand that when you click on a mouse to select something, it is a specific job for the operating system. No matter how small and less time consuming the job is, it is still a job in the queue that the OS maintains.

The processor literally runs like a “Genie” in Alladin’s lamp, at break-neck speed to perform all the tasks but it prioritizes which one to do first. So even if you repeatedly click on the computer screen, the OS will complete more important and critical work before responding to your mouse-click. Generally, this does not pose a problem for us due to the huge processing speed of the processor, good amount of cache memory, good amount of RAM and an OS which handles multi-tasking in a good way. However, no matter it is Windows or Linux or iMac, inadequate hardware will make your system hang or freeze if you try to run resource hungry program on it and multi-tasking capability of the OS won’t be able to save you from a system freeze up.

This can also occur due to malicious software issues like virus and the OS not able to coordinate with the hard-drive because its segments are fragmented. There are ways to tackle the issue.

Let’s have a look at how you to Troubleshoot Computer Freeze Problems.

1)Wait for some time and be patient. Often the system will become normal after one or two minutes.

2)Try not to open more than one application at a time.

3)A high resolution will use up more memory but that means you can consider more RAM or a graphics card instead of trying to run the software in low resolution.

4)Try virus removal support to remove malware and viruses.

5)When exactly is the machine freezing? You might need to update the drivers or make sure that “hibernation” is turned off.

6)A BIOS update might be ultimately necessary although I would not recommend you to go for it without the supervision of a technical expert.
