As the 2010 FIFA World Cup kicks off today, fans are all already charged up with the excitement to enjoy the mega-event. However, a word of caution for all those who are using Internet – you can get affected by a new FIFA World Cup Virus!! Yes, this is the latest virus update for you all. According to Sophos, an antivirus company, the VBS/Chick-F virus can attack your computer anytime through e-mails. It’ll come as a compressed HTML file with a subject line “RE: Korea Japan Results.”
So, how does it attack your computer? As said, you will get an e-mail with a subject line “RE” Korea Japan Results.” Once you execute the compressed HTML file, a message will come up that says “Enable active To See Korea Japan results”. Now once you enable ActiveX, the virus will search for Internet Relay Chat (IRC) ‘exe’ (executable) file in your hard drives. The virus gets copied onto the C: drive as “koreajapan.chm”. Then it spreads itself to other computers, which are on the same IRC channel. After planting itself, it looks up the contact list on the Microsoft Outlook. An email is generated automatically to the first person on the list. And that is how it goes viral! Before you know it, you will be in dire need of computer help.
So how do you get around it? The computer repair experts suggest users not to click on any arbitrary link. Any suspect link that promises to lead you to a FIFA World Cup page must be avoided. There are many authentic sites where you can get information about the tournament; you need not hunt around for it.
