A

Adware-Specialized type of computer software that gives banner ads or pop-up ads every time while surfing internet is known as adware.

Application-Computer Application or "app" for short is simply a program with a user interface.

B

Bit-It is the smallest unit of information that a computer can hold. The speed at which a system functions is commonly expressed as Bit Per Second or bps in short. Eight bits is equivalent to one byte.

Boot-Boot refers to the process of starting up an operating system. If the computer system is already running the process is called rebooting.

C

CD-ROM-The full form of CD-ROM is the Compact Disk-Read Only Memory. It is optical disc where the information can be read but not be written.

CPU-CPU stands for Central Processing Unit. It is the core functional part of a computer and so it is considered as the most important component of a system.  

D

Data Base-Database of a computer organizes and holds all the data and it makes a recovery process easy and systematic.

Dial-up Connection-It is the most common form of internet connection for the home users. Here the computer systems get connected with a host computer by means of telephone lines.

Disk-It is a part of computer system that stores data and retain them when the computer is turned off. Disk can be an internal device as well as external removable object.  

Download-Download is a data transferring activity where files can be brought from one computer to the other.

E

E-mail-E-mail stands for Electronic mail. This is a specialized internet service to send text or files to other computers via an internet connection.

F

File-File referred as a unit of information stored in a computer memory.

Firewall-A specialized protection for computer. Firewall prevents unauthorized access or computer hackers from getting into a computer system.

H

Hacker-An unauthorized practice of breaking computer system privacy, destroying personal data, stealing copyrighted stuffs or performing other illegal acts is termed as hacking. The person or programs involved in such practices are known as the hacker.   

I

Icon-A small graphical representation of an object, action or similar other stuffs in known as the icon.

Internet-A worldwide network through which computer communicates. The internet system includes World Wide Web News groups and Usenet user groups.

K

Keyboard-It is a computer input device, similar to a typewriter keyboard with several extra functional keys.

Kilobyte-A thousand bytes is equivalent to a kilobyte.

L

Laptop-It is a portable computer unit.

LCD-LCD stands for Liquid Crystal Display which is a type of computer monitor that works on liquid crystal cell technology.

M

Megabyte-Megabyte is equivalent to a million bytes.

Memory-Computer hard drive is referred to as the basic computer memory. This component temporarily stores data. The most common types of memory are ROM, RAM, and Flash.

Modem- It is computer internet device that connects a computer to a phone line and allows the computer to communicate with other systems through that portal.

Monitor- The display of a computer system is termed as the monitor.

Motherboard- Motherboard is the main circuit board of a computer system. Main drives and peripheral components get attached with this circuit through slots and sockets.

Mouse- This is an electronic computer component used as a pointer on the computer screen.

Multimedia- It is a technology to use of text, pictures, audio, and or video to deliver information through digital media.

N

Network- It is a system through which multiple computer systems get connected together to share information.

Notebook- It is a small computer unit with concise feature, functionality and battery life.

O

Operating system- It is a set of instruction that directs a computer on how to function when it is turned on. In other words operating system is a program that manages overall computer resources and performs basic functionalities.

Organizer- Organizer is a small computer setup or electronic index to store names, phone numbers, address, dates or similar other information.

P

PC- PC stands for Personal Computer. In wider sense a computer running under Microsoft Windows operating system is known as PC system.

PDA- PDA is the short form of Personal Digital Assistant. It is a small computer unit with relatively small battery power and detachable pointer. Palm Pilot is the most popular PDA available in present market.

Peripheral- Any external computer device used to enhance overall computer performance is known as the peripherals. Common computer peripherals include keyboard, mouse, speaker, digital camera, printer, scanner etc.

Processor- The processor also called Central Processing Unit, or CPU. Processor is the major part of a computer that works to run the entire computer system.

R

RAM- RAM stands for Random Access Memory. RAM is one of the three basic types of memory. It is regarded as the working memory of a computer system where a specific part of a program get stored so that it can run faster and easier. It is a temporary storage device from where the data get deleted when the system is turned off.

ROM- ROM stands for Read Only Memory. It contains permanent information inserted by the operator. Here the data can be read but not be altered.

S

Server- Server is a computer system that shares its resources with other computers on a network.

T

TCP/IP- TCP/IP stands for Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol. Files and other data get transferred through these protocols to and from other systems over the internet.

U

UNIX- It is a very popular and most common operating system used to run high end computer applications over internet.

UPS- UPS stands for Uninterruptible Power Supply. It is an electrical power source that involves a battery to provide power back up to a computer system during outage.

URL- Uniform resource Locator. It is a protocol to fetch a certain document over internet.

V

Virus-Computer virus is an unauthorized set of program that is configured to replicate itself secretly from one system to another by means of shared data or other form of internet communications. It works to steal personal information and deliver to a third party for illegal access. In extreme cases of virus attack, stored information or even a core computer setup can be destroyed completely.

W

Web cam- Web cam is a digital video camera that can transfer live images to the computer system.

Window- Window is a part of computer display that enables users to select certain program pointed with a mouse or stylus. Windows is also the name of Microsoft operating system.

 Word Processor- It is a type of processor work to produce textual documents in a computer.

Z

ZIP- It is a compressed file format used to accommodate files and folders to a restricted space.
